Dandong, which is located near the sea, is also a great place for clamming. When you go to the beach, you can also bring some delicious food back. Dandong’s Dalujiao Island is a place I recommend for clamming. There’s also the Toad Island and other places, which locals know best.
Tide Chart
When the tide goes out, the seawater will recede hundreds of meters, forming mudflats. This is where the seabirds forage for food and where people go clamming.
So, to go clamming, we first need to understand the tide chart.
Suppose the high tide is at 8:00 today, then tomorrow’s high tide will be at 8:48.
The tides in the Bohai Bay are “two-headed tides” on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. The biggest difference in tides occurs around the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, making this the best time to go clamming.
The 7th is the “dead tide” and the sea will hardly recede.
From the 8th to the 10th, the tide is low, the beach often only shows a small edge, and the tide rises quickly.
From the 12th to the 13th, the tide has receded completely near dawn and will soon rise again.
The 15th to the 20th, and the 1st to the 4th are all large tide days, and the best time to go clamming.
On the 5th and 6th, the tide will also recede, but it will not be a large tide.
After the 20th, the size of the receding tide will gradually decrease until the next cycle begins.
Good places to go clamming in Dandong
The small island, Ocean Red, should be about 20 yuan per person.
Toad Island, in Donggang, is abundant. There is not much to be found at Zhangdao and Lu dao.
Dalujiao Island and Zhangdao
It is very difficult to find seafood in Dalujiao Island and Zhangdao now. You can find some seafood on the smaller island, Ocean Red, but it is fee-based. If you catch a big tide in Heidao, Zhuanghe, you can find conch and crabs, but it is best to bring tools.
Dalujiao Island is surrounded by the sea on all sides and is known for its abundant produce. It produces over a hundred varieties of seafood, including shrimp, swimming crabs, conch, variegated clams, Venus clams and various types of fish. Its fresh seafood is highly praised by gourmands.
There are also many natural and cultural attractions on the island, such as Erlang Stone, Gaba Date Tree, Drip Water Lake, Tiger Cave, Camel Peak, Mao Wenlong Stele, Sea God’s Temple, British Navigation Lighthouse, and the ruins of the Danish Church. The Moon Bay and Shuangzhu Beach that surround the island are the largest natural bathing beaches in the northern part of China. They are also ideal places to go clamming, collect seashells, fish, surf, watch the sunrise in the morning and listen to the sound of the waves at night.
Donggang, Dandong
Produce: Known for its seafood and mountain products (ironic, isn’t it?) Huang Hai seafood is famous throughout China (known by all involved in the seafood industry), chestnuts, apricot plums, Northeast rice (the ancestor of Northeast rice was first successfully planted in Liulin, Donggang, by Korean immigrants and then gradually spread northwards)!
