Chinese Tourists Are No Longer Focused on Shopping

Recent foreign media surveys have found that Chinese tourists are no longer focused on shopping during their overseas trips. This is due to the overall improvement in the comprehensive quality of the younger generation. Those who gained wealth through real estate and speculation are getting old and no longer have the energy to shop. The relatively poorer younger generation, on the other hand, lacks the financial resources and energy to shop. The main purpose of overseas travel is now to gain insights and experience, rather than the “nouveau riche” model of the past.

Chinese Tourists Are No Longer Focused on Shopping

Zhu Yingbo, a 24-year-old from Chongqing, recently traveled to Thailand with his girlfriend for an experiential trip.

He is a representative of young Chinese tourists and a typical example of the younger generation.

“We hardly spent any money on shopping, neither myself nor my girlfriend,” the survey found. The proportion of tourists who consider shopping as their primary travel motivation has dropped from over 2/3 in 2016 to 1/3.

This is the first time in history that shopping is no longer the primary reason for Chinese tourists to travel abroad. They are now seeking more experiential travel.

Netizens’ Comments:

It’s a hassle to buy things and carry them back home, why not just buy them at home?

Yeah, I rarely buy things when I travel. It’s all about eating and having fun. I think young people mainly focus on food and entertainment.

In previous years, those who went abroad were the first to get rich. Now, a large number of people going abroad are on budget trips. Of course, they want to shop, but they just don’t have the money!

In the past, those who didn’t have money wouldn’t even think about traveling abroad. Now there are all kinds of budget travel packages and merchants cooperating with low-priced shopping groups. Basically, anyone who wants to go abroad can go.

The things I bought abroad the year before last are still unused. What else do I need to buy? For an ordinary family, how many duffel bags do you need? You don’t need three, right? A single bag can last you at least ten years. What’s there to buy?

A bag for ten years? You’re kidding! A bag can last you at most three years! By the third year, you’ll be reluctant to carry it around because it looks outdated and you spent a lot of money on it. It’s not a pleasant feeling. These luxury bags are meant for the wealthy. They keep releasing new designs. As ordinary people, we can only save up and buy an outdated style to carry around. We don’t have the energy to chase after new designs.
