The G219 Tacheng section runs from the north of Hoboksar Mongol Autonomous County to the south of Alataw Pass. It is an ideal place for self-driving tours. Here you’ll find snow mountains, forests, deserts, rivers, lakes, grasslands, canyons, and wetlands. There are also many places along the way where you can enjoy flowers.
1. Baluluke Mountain
Baluluke Mountain is located in Yumin County and Toli County of Tacheng Region. It is known as the “world of flowers,” “the botanical garden,” and “the natural museum of wild animals.” Baluluke Mountain boasts thousands of kinds of flowers. From the opening of the spring mountain flower festival to summer, you can enjoy dozens of species of flowers in bloom.
The Paeonia Valley Scenic Area is located on the northwest slope of Baluluke Mountain, 51 kilometers from Yumin County, Tacheng Region. It has been rated as a 4A National Scenic Area. The total area of the scenic area is about 1200 hectares. Every spring, natural peonies bloom in clusters in the shallow valley, forming a unique geographical landscape that connects with the surrounding rolling hills and grasslands. Here, abundant sunshine, suitable temperatures, and fertile soil give birth to the largest wild peonies valley in Northwest China.
Flower viewing time: May to mid-July
Flower viewing highlights: You can participate in the Mountain Flower Festival in Yumin County, Tacheng Region, and enjoy wild almonds, rhubarb, wild peonies, and various unknown wildflowers. It’s a feast for the eyes!
Travel tips: Eating and accommodation in Yumin County are very convenient. You can choose from guesthouses and local delicacies. The 7080s Impression Museum is recommended.
2. Baiyumuza Scenic Area
The Baiyumuza Scenic Area is located 90 kilometers east of Emin County. Driving along the G219, which resembles a black ribbon winding through the mountains, you’ll see hundreds of wild flowers such as golden lotus, peonies, and roses vying for attention.
Flower viewing time: Mid-May to mid-June
Flower viewing highlights: Nearly a thousand species of precious medicinal plants and wild flowers with high ornamental value form a sea of wild flowers stretching for dozens of miles.
Travel tips: You can experience the Baiyumuza Auto Camp’s starry sky tent and guesthouses. You can also enjoy the local delicacy “Fish Sheep Fresh” banquet and get up close and personal with nature.
3. Tarbagatai Mountain
Tarbagatai Mountain is located north of Tacheng City, also known as “Beishan,” and is an excellent summer pasture for Tacheng City. Here, the air is fresh and invigorating, and wildflowers cover the mountains in a dazzling array of colors.
Flower viewing time: Late June to early July
Flower viewing highlights: At the foot of Tarbagatai Mountain, irises, yellow flower Rhodiola rosea, and aquilegia vulgaris, among other wild flowers, bloom in vibrant hues, creating a breathtaking floral wonderland.
Travel tips: In Tacheng City, there are numerous dining options and accommodation choices. It is recommended to taste the Tacheng “Three Treasures” (Malosh ice cream, bread, and jam), local dried meat, and visit the Red Mansion Museum and the Accordion Museum.
4. Songhua Bay Scenic Area
The Songhua Bay Scenic Area is located on the southern slope of Sail Mountain, northeast of Hoboksar Mongol Autonomous County, 30 kilometers from the county seat. This area is famous for its high mountains, strange peaks, unusual scenery, and dense pine forests. The towering and dense pine forests, cascading waterfalls, vibrant and fragrant Damacha grasslands, and stunning views of snow mountains, white clouds, and blue skies combine to create a truly breathtaking landscape.
Flower viewing time: Mid-June to August
Flower viewing highlights: Peonies, golden chain tree, wild roses, mountain chrysanthemums, and other flowers bloom in profusion, vying for attention. All kinds of trees thrive in the rugged mountains, creating a lush and verdant landscape.
Travel tips: The Songhua Bay Visitor Center is recommended. It has complete supporting facilities, including Songhua Family Guesthouses, supermarkets, and restaurants. Here, listen to the sound of the pine forest and dance with friends and family under the moonlight.
