Self-driving is a great option for travel nowadays. There are many tourist attractions suitable for self-driving day trips around Shanghai. We recommend that you go to Wusongkou Paotai Wetland Forest Park, Dongtan Wetland, etc., for more details, see below.
1、Wusongkou Paotai Wetland Forest Park
Explore history, find wildness
Shanghai Wusongkou Paotai Wetland Forest Park was officially opened to the public on July 1 last year. It is built on the riverside beach between the Yangtze River and the Huangpu River. This area was gradually reclaimed from the 1960s with steel slag, so it is also known as the “garden on steel slag”, and it is currently the largest wetland park in Shanghai. The Qing government built a naval fort here, hence the name “Paotai”. There is a nearly 2-hectare lawn activity area in the park, which is very suitable for various outdoor activities such as flying kites and picnics. In addition, there are slides, swings, sandpits and climbing nets suitable for children, as well as a 6-meter-high spider web large climbing rope tower suitable for teenagers.

The nearly 2-kilometer-long riverfront, as well as the forest and wetland formed by thousands of trees, retain their original ecological environment, which is worth visiting for city dwellers who live in concrete jungles every day. Moreover, not many people know about it, so it’s not too crowded. You can also admire the reeds, coix, arrowhead and other aquatic plant communities after the tide recedes, find fiddler crabs and other beach animals, which also has a unique wildness. Sometimes you can also see flocks of seagulls, egrets and other water birds.
2、Dongtan Wetland
Heart-opening reeds
Dongtan is the largest wetland in the Yangtze River estuary area. Dongtan faces the river and the sea, has a flat terrain and vast land, and is a resource area with island-type ecological tourism development value. Dongtan Bird Nature Reserve is an important habitat and wintering ground for migratory birds worldwide. The total number of birds accounts for 70% of the bird species in Shanghai, many of which are rare and endangered species under national and international protection. Every spring and autumn, 2-3 million migratory birds come here to roost and winter, forming a bird paradise, especially a large number of rare birds

The wooden boardwalk extending into the depths of the wetland, the endless reeds, the quaint wooden houses, are all heart-opening and can help you temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle. If you are lucky, you can also see migratory birds coming here to roost. I heard that the sunrise at Dongtan is particularly beautiful, so if time permits, you must go and see it.
3、Dongping National Forest Park
If you don’t want to go to Dongtan, you can also go to Chongming Dongping National Forest Park. There are entertainment projects such as a sledding field, a paintball field, a climbing wall, a boat dock, and a barbecue area in the park.

However, looking out to sea from the ramp section, you can only see the winding shape of the bridge, but you can’t see the whole thing, which is a bit of a pity. You can also drive to Yangshan Port and go to the viewing platform to experience the atmosphere of a modern port.
