Where to go for a one-day tour of Shanghai’s ancient towns

To experience the millennium charm of Shanghai, you have to go to the ancient town for a walk and a look. Gaoqiao, named after the bridge, is located at the confluence of the Yangtze River, the Huangpu River and the East China Sea. It is also the only well-preserved historical and cultural town within the outer ring road in Shanghai.

1、 Gaoqiao Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall

Also known as “Yangxian Hall”, it looks like a Chinese-style courtyard from the front, but from the back, it looks like a Western-style villa across the river. It is a representative building of Shikumen and can be said to be a collection of the essence of architecture. It was built in 1931, covers an area of 1100 square meters, and houses over 600 exhibits. It condenses the history of Gaoqiao and reflects various aspects of Gaoqiao, including its culture, production and life, and local customs.

2、 Gaoqiao Qingxi Party and Mass Service Station

This is a multi-functional party and mass service station integrating the education place of the original aspiration and mission, the dissemination place of red culture, and the check-in place for party members and the masses. It mainly consists of two areas: red cultural inheritance area and party member and mass service area, and uses pictures, texts and objects to show the important contributions made by the people and the army of Gaoqiao in the Anti-Japanese War, the Liberation War and the construction of New China.

3、 Gaoqiao Velvet Embroidery Museum

Gaoqiao Velvet Embroidery Museum is located in the Huang family’s residence, built in the early 20th century. It is a traditional brick and wood structure residence with a building area of about 1000 square meters. The museum exhibits works of Shanghai velvet embroidery, a national intangible cultural heritage. The Shanghai velvet embroidery works sent by Gaoqiao Town have participated in the CIIE for four consecutive sessions, showcasing its unique artistic charm to the world.

4、 Qian Huian Memorial Hall and Ye Xin Gaoqiao Studio

Qian Huian Memorial Hall and Ye Xin Gaoqiao Studio are connected to each other in a north-south direction, with their backs against West Street of Gaoqiao. The total exhibition area is 500 square meters. Qian Huian is one of the outstanding representatives of the Haipai School of Painting. He is famous in Shanghai for his portraits and figure paintings of ladies, and is known as “the origin of Haipai”. Ye Xin Gaoqiao Studio was built in 2020 and is a characteristic cultural project introduced by Gaoqiao Town. Strolling through the exhibition halls and taking a break in the elegant seats of the studio, you can jointly feel “the life in the paintings” of Qian Huian and comprehend “the real life” in Ye Xin’s writings.

5、 Xu Jianrong Art and History Museum

6、 Tai Chi Boxing Hall

Tai Chi boxing has a long history and folk customs, and is a unique intangible cultural heritage project in Gaoqiao. In order to display, inherit and develop Tai Chi culture, the Tai Chi Boxing Hall was established in 2019. The exhibition hall covers an area of 500 square meters and exhibits historical materials, boxing scores, martial arts weapons, etc. of Gaoqiao Tai Chi boxing, enabling visitors to understand the Tai Chi culture of Gaoqiao and appreciate the development process of traditional Chinese martial arts.

7、 Jiangdong Academy

Jiangdong Academy is the first academy officially approved by Shanghai after the reform and opening up. Shanghai Jiangdong Academy is committed to spreading excellent traditional culture and has functions such as exhibition, lectures, cultural exchange, and creative discussion.

The hundreds of exhibits in the hall are full of ancient charm and full of the charm of Jiangnan families, vividly restoring the production, life scenes and folk customs of a four-generation family in Gaoqiao during the Republic of China.

9、 Shanghai Riverside Forest Park

Shanghai Riverside Forest Park is located in the northeast corner of Gaoqiao, with the Huangpu River to the west and the Yangtze River to the north. The two rivers converge with the East China Sea, forming a unique “three waters” location in Shanghai. It currently covers an area of over 120 hectares and has become a gateway landscape to Shanghai by water. The main scenic spots in the park include: characteristic plant viewing area (including rhododendron garden, rose garden), wetland plant viewing area, ecological forest protection area, orchard viewing area, riverside viewing area, etc.

10、 Gaoqiao New Town

Gaoqiao New Town is one of the “One City and Nine Towns” construction projects in Shanghai. It is the only project located within the outer ring road, dominating the East Middle Ring Road and adjacent to the Senlan “green lung”. It is the back garden of the Free Trade Zone. Gaoqiao New Town has about 100,000 square meters of Dutch-style commercial facilities, covering a total area of about 600,000 square meters, surrounded by natural water systems, with mature life supporting facilities, integrating residential, commercial, leisure and other functions.
