This article mainly talks about the scenery and food in Shanghai, but also includes some attractions in Hangzhou. If you plan to go to Hangzhou, you can check them out. It’s definitely a great place to travel.
1933 Old Mill
This is a place I wanted to visit last time but didn’t make it. After getting off the subway and walking through the streets, I arrived at this former slaughterhouse. Although it has been remodeled, some of the old traces can still be seen. It’s a great place to take photos if you encounter good weather. Although the Old Mill now has many coffee shops and other stores, the surrounding low-rise buildings reflect more of Shanghai’s appearance, letting people know that Shanghai is not just about skyscrapers, but also has many low-rise buildings.
The picture above is the cattle road. In the past, the livestock to be slaughtered would walk from here to their end.
No visitor to Shanghai should miss this place. This is my fourth time coming here to check it out. I specially chose a place to stay close to the Bund for the morning views. During the Chinese New Year, room prices skyrocketed, and it took a lot of effort to find a suitable place to stay. Thankfully, it proved to be the right choice. The first day was overcast, so I overslept the next day and missed a sunny day. I could only take photos of the Oriental Pearl Tower without clouds on the third morning.
Jinmao Tower 88th Floor Observation Deck
Last time I was here, it was rainy, so I didn’t waste the ticket money to see the rain from Jinmao. This time, I encountered good weather every day of the trip, so I quickly booked tickets and headed to Jinmao. On this largest pedestrian overpass, as long as you find the right angle, you can start snapping photos of the three tall buildings and marvel at China’s amazing infrastructure capabilities. The best time to visit the observation deck of Jinmao Tower is around sunset. You can watch the sunset and the evening sky, and then see the lights of the buildings on both sides of the Huangpu River, enjoying the day and night of Lujiazui.
Yu Garden
After coming down from Jinmao Tower, I realized it was still early, so I took the subway to Yu Garden. Surprisingly, I found a folk lantern festival and managed to avoid the peak crowds. So, I started my journey through the Yu Garden lantern festival at night.
Yu Garden
Fuyi Granary
I discovered this place while looking at travel guides. When I arrived, I realized the surrounding area was full of cultural relics, perfect for a leisurely stroll and a peaceful experience. There won’t be any tourist groups or crowds to bother you. When you get tired, find a coffee shop to rest, and if you’re hungry, head to the Shengli River Food Street for a delicious meal.
West Lake
West Lake is beautiful in all seasons. I didn’t have enough time in four days to explore the entire West Lake and experience the beauty of each season. Here, you should slow down and truly feel the surroundings. You’ll fall in love with it more and more.
Food
Shanghai cuisine, also known as Haipai cuisine, is famous for its use of fresh ingredients, especially fish and shrimp. Only the freshest and liveliest seafood is used. The dishes are characterized by their rich sauce, bright colors, and emphasis on the original flavor. Modern chefs have retained the essence of Shanghai cuisine while adapting it to the tastes of modern diners, making it even more delicious. Of course, as a Taurus foodie, I definitely ate a lot.
The carefully crafted Shanghai dishes are impeccable, and the original-style, old-fashioned building design creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The dishes are suitable for most people’s palates. I ordered a lot of dishes and the overall feeling was great. It was truly a comfortable dining experience.
