Located in Hefei, Sanhe Ancient Town is free to the public and does not charge admission. It boasts a profound local history and culture, and offers many attractions worth visiting. As a national 5A-level scenic spot, here’s how you can make the most of a one-day trip to Sanhe Ancient Town.
Tour Strategy
The ancient town consists of three ancient streets: Gu Dong Street, Gu Nan Street, and Gu Xi Street. There are two ancient cities: Nancheng (South City) and Beicheng (North City). One river flows through it: Xiao Nan River.
Gu Xi Street is currently the longest of the three ancient streets. The other two streets are not as long as Gu Xi Street. However, Gu Nan Street is the best-preserved, with its stone-paved street dating back many years.
Gu Xi Street Attractions: Xian Gui Bridge, Dong Yin Chu Life and Achievements Exhibition Hall, Liu Tong Xing Long Zhuang, Zong Xian Root Carving Art Museum, Cui Zhu Pavilion
Gu Dong Street Attractions: Sun Zhongde Memorial Hall
Gu Nan Street Attractions: He Lu, Yang Zhenning’s Former Residence, City God Temple, Gu Yu Fang

Local specialties include rice dumplings, rice wine, feather fans, and malt sugar. The rice dumplings are filled with river shrimp, wrapped in rice skin, deep-fried, and served. They are quite delicious. I haven’t tried the rice wine or the feather fan.

tip1:
As you exit Sanhe Bus Station, tricycles will approach you, claiming that the station is far from Sanhe Ancient Town and that the ancient town is too large to walk around. In reality, the bus station is only a 10-minute walk from the ancient town, and the town itself is not that big, making it suitable for walking. However, the tricycle drivers may offer to design a tour route for you and provide commentary, typically charging 30 yuan for a tour of the ancient town, with room for negotiation. Therefore, you can decide whether or not to take a tricycle based on your preference.
tip2: Several temples in Sanhe Ancient Town engage in the practice of defrauding tourists by soliciting donations for incense after they pay their respects. A donation of several hundred yuan is often requested. If someone tries to persuade you to donate, simply ignore them.
