It was built in the first year of Tang Ruizong’s Taiji to the fifteenth year of Tang Xuanzong’s Tianbao (AD 712 to 755), nearly 1300 years ago. It is said that Lü Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, once entered the mountain to practice Taoism, so Taoists called this mountain “Dongyang Mountain”, listed as the 24th of the “Thirty-six Caves and Elysian Fields”. It is dedicated to Liu Xiangu and Zhou Zhenren, covers an area of about 400 square meters, and is a temple-style courtyard building. It is divided into front, middle, and rear halls, as well as east and west wings. The front and middle halls were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt in the 1990s, made of brick and stone; the rear hall is a Qing Dynasty stone and wood structure building, supported by stone beams and stone pillars. In the fourth year of Ming Wanli (1576), it was rebuilt into Dongyang Ancient Temple, which is the Linji sect of the Southern School of Zen Buddhism, and is considered the first of the four holy places of Buddhism in the Changsha area. This mountain combines Buddhism and Taoism, and its fame has spread far and wide.
