2、Introduction to the Scenic Area
Thousand Buddha Mountain is located in Licheng District, Jinan City, Shandong Province. It is one of the three famous scenic spots in Jinan, known as the “Three Wonders of Jinan” along with Baotu Spring and Daming Lake. The scenic area got its name because during the Sui Dynasty’s Kaihuang era, Buddhism flourished and thousands of Buddha statues were carved into the mountainside.
The stone Buddha carvings on Thousand Buddha Mountain are concentrated on the Thousand Buddha Cliff behind Xingguo Temple. Xingguo Temple, also known as Thousand Buddha Mountain Temple, was built in the Tang Dynasty and was gradually expanded over the centuries. On the cliff southwest of the temple gate, there is an inscription in seal script that reads “First Mihu”, each character about 4 meters square. There are over 60 Sui Dynasty stone Buddhas on the Thousand Buddha Cliff, dating back to ancient times and possessing high artistic value. To the east of Thousand Buddha Mountain, on the Buddha Hui Mountain, there are also stone Buddha carvings. Among them, on the foot of the main peak, there is a Buddha niche with a 7-meter-tall and 4-meter-wide Buddha head, commonly known as the “Big Buddha Head”. This is a rare stone carving.
