Accommodation on Mount Huangshan is quite expensive, especially during peak seasons. Setting up a tent outside can save you a lot of money. Here are some suggestions for camping in Mount Huangshan~ Remember to choose a tent with a bottom pad, as it can get very cold at night. Also, be sure to bring a thick sleeping bag.
Camping in Mount Huangshan
1. If you choose to set up a tent, it costs 30 yuan per spot at the entrance of Xihai Hotel, and 300 yuan to rent a tent. The area is very safe. There is no charge at the entrance of Baiyun, but the area is not as good as Xihai. Make sure you have all your equipment because it gets really, really cold at night on the mountain.
Camping in Mount Huangshan requires prior booking.

2. Prices on the mountain are 5 to 10 times higher than those at the foot of the mountain. A bottle of mineral water costs 15 yuan, a pack of instant noodles costs 30 yuan. Isn’t it more expensive than Happy Valley? But when you see how the porters carry things up step by step, you won’t think it’s expensive anymore!
3. Whether you hike up from the front or back of the mountain depends on your accommodation. Ask your guide or staff beforehand.
4. There are many taxis waving at the roadside, some of them might overcharge tourists. It’s better to choose a ride from a bigger platform to be safer.
5. Suitable for family or couple trips. Self-driving is also totally ok!
6. Take the cable car. As it goes uphill, it’s a bit scary.
7. Some of the souvenirs in the supermarket are really bad! Just average. It’s hard to resist.
Food Sharing and Tips to Avoid Bad Restaurants
For food, choose Lao Jie Di Yi Lou in Lao Jie. It’s an old Anhui restaurant with a long history. The stinky mandarin fish and bamboo shoots are highly recommended.
Friends from Huangshan recommended us Hao Zai Lai Huangshan sesame cakes and Wang Yi Tiao dumplings, but we didn’t have time to try them. You can give them a try if you’re interested.
Also, in Hongcun, duck legs and osmanthus cake sold by local people are super delicious. Duck leg costs 10 yuan, osmanthus cake costs 30 yuan.
We ate at a very bad Anhui restaurant outside Hongcun, I can’t remember the name. It seems that it’s unavoidable to avoid bad restaurants!
In Hongcun, braised small river fish and bamboo shoots are recommended. They taste great.
We had a buffet at Baiyun Hotel in Mount Huangshan. Let’s just say, it’s better than eating instant noodles outside with campers.
