Now is the best time of year for cycling in Changsha. There are many great places to ride in Changsha, so which ones are recommended for sightseeing? What cycling routes are recommended? Let’s take a closer look at these for you.
1、Huai Tang
Cycling route: Hunan University Dongfang Hong Square → Lianhua Town → Huai Tang Hot Springs
Huai Tang Bicycle Theme Park is the first “bicycle theme park” in the province. The race tracks at Huai Tang Bicycle Theme Park are all built to international mountain bike race track standards. The professional track is 5.3 kilometers long and the amateur track is 3.5 kilometers long. The scenery along the race track is picturesque, with fragrant flowers and plants. There are bamboo forests and pines, clear ponds in the countryside, and large fields of rapeseed flowers.
2、Yuelu Mountain
Cycling route: Hunan Normal University Erliban → Yuewang Temple → 73rd Army Tomb → Stone Bridge → Lushan Temple → Baihequan Steep Slope → Yinxinshi House → Bird Forest (South) → Yunlu Palace → Bird Forest North → Huangxing Tomb → Pythons Cave — Fire Road → Hunan Normal University
The whole journey is about 5 kilometers. The staff of Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area suggest that cyclists should not rush down the steep slopes at Baihequan and other places to avoid hurting tourists who are climbing the mountain.
3、Yang Hu
Cycling route: Yang Hu Wetland main entrance (Pioneer Cow Sculpture Square) → Science Museum → Observation Tower → Wind and Rain Bridge → Bird Watching Corridor → Agricultural Culture Experience Area → Yang Hu Wetland main entrance (Pioneer Cow Sculpture Square)
Currently, Yang Hu Wetland is building a 13-kilometer long slow-traffic system. Bring your beloved bicycle and come to Yang Hu to relax and enjoy the freedom.
4、Hei Mi Feng
Cycling route: City center → Wujiaoling → Furong North Road → Qiao Yi → River embankment (2 kilometers of gravel road) over the railway → Archway → Abnormal Slope (recommended location) → Hei Mi Feng peak → Villagers’ government → Back mountain (weathered rock gravel road, with some risk) → Fufeng → Fuxing → Beishan Town → Hongshan → Sifangping → City center
Cycling on Hei Mi Feng, the biggest test is the “abnormal slope” before entering the park ticket station. This slope goes all the way up and stretches deep into the mountains. It’s definitely a comprehensive test of cyclists’ physical fitness. However, on the way up the mountain by bike, the air in the mountains is fresh and the breeze is cool. You can see azaleas and spring bamboo shoots by the roadside. It’s a unique experience, especially when you reach the top of the mountain. The Hei Mi Feng Reservoir dam appears in front of you, with a sense of “high gorges out of a flat lake.” When you go down the mountain, the “abnormal slope” you went up just now becomes the best slide. Rush down the mountain all the way, allowing cyclists to experience the thrill of extreme sports.
5、Around Changsha City One-Day Tour
Cycling route: Train station → Changsha Evening News → Upper ring road → Sanchaji Bridge → Yuelu District → Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area → Cross Xiangjiang Bridge 1, to Taiping Street → Through Taiping Street → Pozi Street → Du Fu Jiangge → Tianxin Pavilion
Changsha city one-day tour is a favorite of many office workers, but it’s best to choose times when there is less traffic on the road. According to cyclist Xiao Xu, he usually chooses to ride in the morning on weekends or in the evening on weekdays. This way, there is less traffic on the road, which is relatively safer.
6、Dawei Mountain
Cycling route: Changsha city center → Jiao Xi Ling → Liuyang City → Guandu (camping site) → Dawei Mountain (recommended to climb to the top) → Return the same way
Dawei Mountain is located at the junction of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. The highest peak, Qixingling, is 1607.9 meters above sea level, the highest point in Changsha area. Dawei Mountain has superior natural conditions and abundant tourism resources. But some experienced cyclists have said that to go cycling to Dawei Mountain, you need to arrange a three-day cycling trip and camp in Guandu, otherwise it will be difficult for cyclists to return to Changsha on time.
