The Black Elk Temple, also known as Dongyang Temple, is located on the west slope of the top of Black Elk Peak. It was built from the first year of Tang Ruizong Taiji to the fifteenth year of Tang Xuanzong Tianbao (712 AD to 755 AD), which is nearly 1300 years old. It is said that Lü Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, once entered the mountain to practice Taoism, so Taoists called this mountain “Dongyang Mountain”, which is listed as the twenty-fourth of the “Thirty-Six Heavenly Palaces and Fortunate Lands”. It enshrines Liu Xiangu and Zhou Zhenren. It covers an area of about 400 square meters and is a temple-style courtyard building style, divided into front, middle and rear halls, and east and west wings. The front and middle halls were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and were rebuilt in the 1990s. They are brick and stone structures; the rear hall is a Qing Dynasty stone and wood structure building, supported by stone beams and stone pillars. In the fourth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1576), it was rebuilt into Dongyang Ancient Temple, which is the Linji sect of the Southern School of Zen Buddhism, and is regarded as the first of the four Buddhist holy sites in Changsha. This mountain is a combination of Buddhism and Taoism, and its fame is far-reaching.
2、 Natural Rock Climbing Base
The forest park belongs to the igneous rock landform. The rock surface is smooth, the inclination angle is large, and the rock outcrops on the ground, forming a series of rock walls in the mountain, which is amazing. Among them, the most spectacular rock walls are from the management office to the periphery of the expansion training camp. There are a total of 6 places. The largest rock wall area exceeds 1 hectare, about 60 meters high and 180 meters long. The surface is smooth, and the inclination angle with the ground is over 60 degrees. There is no vegetation on it, while the surrounding soil and vegetation are completely covered on the rock surface, and the ecological environment is extremely fragile. It has now been built into a rock climbing base.
3、 Tetracentron sinense
Tetracentron sinense is a deciduous small tree of the Cornellaceae family. It has good ornamental value and edible value. It often appears in areas above 800 meters above sea level. It is an important component of dwarf forests on the tops of mountains in middle and high altitudes. On the top of the main peak of the forest park, which is less than 60 square meters, there are 4 ancient trees of Tetracentron sinense. In early summer, when the flowers bloom, the large white-yellow petal-like bracts are dazzling. In autumn, they turn red and remain on the tree for more than a month; in autumn, the red fruits are full of the tree, with abundant fruits.
The forest park is currently the lowest recorded natural distribution area of Tetracentron sinense in the country. The Tetracentron sinense has a stem thickness of 40 cm and a height of about 5 meters. Modern people talk about the legend of the ancient trees very much. When you look at it up close, it is so big. When you look at it from a distance, it is also so big. If it is a sunny day, you can vaguely see this ancient tree from the Xiangjiang Bridge in Changsha, which is 20 kilometers away. It is also so big. There was once a famous scenic spot called “The Ancient Tree Viewed from Afar”. Local residents are very respectful of the Tetracentron sinense.

It does not dry up in the hot summer. According to legend, an ancient long-lived person who visited famous mountains and holy places and absorbed the essence of heaven and earth dug a pit in Black Elk Peak. Gurgling spring water gushed out from the pit, filling the pit gradually but not overflowing. It never dries up throughout the year. Drinking it can make people live a long life. Therefore, people call it “Longevity Spring”.

The exposed mountain body and stone mountain shrubs combine to form a unique landscape of “canyon flat lake” where two mountains embrace each other, a valley becomes a lake, strange stones fill the mountains, and the peaks and ridges are verdant.
