Information about Shuanglong Cave in Jinhua and the Origin of its Name

It was a coincidence that I decided to visit Shuanglong Cave in Jinhua. After reading Mr. Ye Shengtao’s essay “Remembering Shuanglong Cave in Jinhua,” I was determined to see it for myself, to see if it was truly as special as described in the essay, with extraordinary scenery. With this curiosity, I embarked on this trip.

In many parts of the south, May is already very hot. From leaving the house to getting on the bus, just a few minutes later, I was already covered in sweat. It took about 10 minutes to reach the foot of Beishan Mountain. Here, I felt a coolness, different from the heat in the city. It was the rainy season, and there was a lot of rain. The air was filled with the fragrance of earth.

After parking, I bought tickets at the ticket booth and walked towards the entrance of Shuanglong Cave. There were many surprises along the way. It turned out that there wasn’t just Shuanglong Cave, every place was a beautiful sight. The heavy rain had continued for days, and the mountain water flowed directly down the steps like a waterfall. There was an indescribable feeling, this was the beauty of nature! Different scenery brought different visual impact to people.

We walked for about 10 minutes, looking around as we went, and arrived at the entrance of Shuanglong Cave. We saw the scene that Mr. Ye Shengtao had described, except this time, the boat was small enough to fit two people. We lay side by side on it. As the darkness enveloped us, the boat entered the cave. Suddenly, I felt a sense of oppression. My friend exclaimed, “Ah,” fearing that her belly was too big and might get stuck. It really felt like if I looked up, I would hit my head on the rocks.

A few seconds later, we arrived inside the cave. The air was obviously much cooler than outside, and it was quite humid. Every now and then, water drops would fall on us. The space inside was also quite large, something I couldn’t imagine before coming here. The stalactites of various shapes felt awe-inspiring, a testament to the power of nature.

We continued to walk forward. The cave was sometimes wide, sometimes narrow. In the narrow places, only one person could pass sideways. We hadn’t walked far before we heard a very loud sound of water flowing, like a waterfall. The closer we got, the louder it became. We had to shout to talk to each other. When the sound reached a deafening roar, we were stunned by the sight before us. We saw a curtain of water, cascading down, roaring like thunder, splashing water everywhere. Forgive my phone, it couldn’t capture the magnificence of it.

Probably due to the heavy rain, the waterfall inside the cave was quite impressive. It was truly amazing to see.

We continued upwards along the steps and emerged from the cave. We drove a bit further towards the top of the mountain, and even when we were only halfway up the mountain, we felt shrouded in mist.

This scenery made me feel like “nothing else but Mount Wu is a cloud.” This feeling of being surrounded by mist felt like being in a fairyland. This trip was very enjoyable. The scenery here was much more beautiful than I imagined. Before setting out, I was worried that it might be too commercialized, but after coming here, I was pleasantly surprised. The different ways of sightseeing were also one of the most fun aspects. It was also an excellent place to cool off. I might come back here in the summer, it would surely be a different experience.
