If you want to enjoy beautiful rural scenery, go to Longji Rice Terraces. If you want to see the desolate desert landscape, go to Ali, Tibet. The former shows you beautiful village advancement, while the latter gives you a chance to see some wildlife that is rarely seen.
Longji Rice Terraces
Time: After the 15th of April on the lunar calendar
Longji Rice Terraces are truly a miracle. The local people have used the slopes to cultivate layer upon layer of terraces, using the mountain water to irrigate them. However, this has not destroyed the local forest ecosystem, and they have even trimmed irregular field ridges due to the complex terrain and barren land. Without realizing it, this has formed endless lines and patterns.
The beauty of Longji Rice Terraces can be seen throughout the year, but in the half-month after the 15th of April on the lunar calendar, the terraces will begin to release water. The entire mountain looks like a shattered landscape, reflecting the changing colors of the sky. This is the time that photographers love the most. People with DSLRs are everywhere on the stone road.
Tibet Ali
Time: Mid-May to Mid-June
The best time to traverse the North Line is from mid-May to mid-June and from late August to mid-October. It is a journey of nearly 2,000 kilometers through the uninhabited area, and it is also the ultimate dream of Tibetan land that makes people’s “eyes go to heaven”. Take the route Lhasa – Namtso – Banggo – Nyima – Gaize – Shiquanhe, then return to Lhasa from the south of Ali. The whole journey takes only 10-12 days. You can also turn from Dangra Yumco to Cuoqin – Rendo – Xiongba. If you cut directly into the south line of Ali, the road conditions will be better.
This is a vast land of nearly 300,000 square kilometers, lying between the Nyainqentanglha Mountains and the Gangdise Mountains. It is also the most barren place in China, with thin oxygen and sparse population. But it is also the most vibrant place in China, with more than 40 kinds of rare animals breeding here.
Most of the time, you should be on the bumpy gravel road in the wilderness. There may be vehicle breakdowns, even getting lost and altitude sickness. But it’s because of these things that you’ll have the chance to encounter wildlife, experience the breathtaking colors of the plateau lakes, and feel the harmony between man and nature that the locals have achieved.
