Hongyuan Market Morning Market—Yang Jingyu Cadre Academy—Yang Jingyu Martyrs’ Cemetery. 20 minutes/1.4 kilometers (excluding sightseeing time).

1. Hongyuan Market Morning Market

Let’s start our City Walk at the morning market! After all, with an empty stomach, how can you be at your best?

The Hongyuan Market morning market starts from 4 or 5 in the morning, and the entire street instantly transforms into a bustling bazaar. There are neatly arranged seasonal fruits, full of dopamine colors; fresh vegetables that farmers just picked from their gardens, still glistening with water; and fresh meat that was just brought back, high quality and low price, attracting customers to snap them up.

Of course, there are also the stalls you most look forward to when visiting the morning market, fried dough sticks, fried cakes, twists; they are steaming hot, with a sizzling sound of oil, and the aroma comes out. Then there’s a bowl of Northeastern tofu brain, a full big bowl, with a rich aroma. Freshly baked, shiny red sausages, large intestines, roast chicken, etc., all kinds of cooked food, stacked one next to another into a small mountain, it’s hard not to make you drool.

In addition, there are stalls selling pots and pans, small animals, clothes, and many other things.

2. Yang Jingyu Cadre Academy

Walking along the market through a few streets, you will come to the Yang Jingyu Cadre Academy, affectionately known as Yang Gan Yuan by the people of Tonghua.

The Yang Jingyu Cadre Academy is surrounded by continuous trees forming a sea, reflecting the even more striking Tonghua red in the school district. This red is endless, also telling people the importance of building the Yang Jingyu Cadre Academy.

Next to it is the Yang Jingyu Martyrs’ Cemetery, located on a hill on the east bank of the Hunjiang River. It was built in 1954, covers an area of 20,000 square meters, and is the resting place of the heroic spirit of the great anti-Japanese national hero, General Yang Jingyu. The cemetery is filled with pines and cypresses, green all year round, solemn and majestic. There are often residents who come here for morning exercises. In the pavilion in the distance, the old men set up chess and play a few rounds, with the sound of cracking whips constantly coming from them. Grandpas and grandmas, uncles and aunts wearing Tai Chi practice clothes form their own group, practicing Tai Chi to the soft music from the radio. Not far away, under the trees, there are also young people exercising.

The martyrs shed their blood to bring about today’s peaceful and happy life. Every morning, the happy scene of Tonghua people climbing the mountain for morning exercise is the best portrayal of this!

II. Afternoon Route:

Tonghua City Science and Culture Center—Jiangnan Bridge—Wholesale Center. 36 minutes/2.7 kilometers (excluding sightseeing time).

1. Tonghua City Science and Culture Center

Walking towards the Tonghua City Science and Culture Center, you can see the striking and characteristic red atypical building right above you. It is located south of the Wanfa Bazzi (one of the origins of Manchu culture) Site Park, with mountains behind it, and enjoys a good ecological environment and mountain landscape resources. The Tonghua City Science and Culture Center has six major exhibition halls: the Natural Museum, the History Museum, the Science Exhibition Hall, the Art Museum, the People’s Art Museum, and the Planning Museum, each embodying elements of science, nature, culture, history, and the future.

The afternoon sun casts the openwork patterns of the outer building onto the walls of the museum, creating dappled light and shadows, very futuristic. There are many things to see, and many places to take photos and check in. This is a place you can’t miss.

The snack street outside the Wholesale Center is a gathering place for foodies every few days. The snack street has everything from milk tea, chicken frames, and mixed vegetables. If you’re tired, there are benches to sit on every few meters.

Connected to the snack street is a narrow alley where barbecue, snail noodles, Korean food, etc. are available. The small restaurants look simple, but that’s what you want, a homey feel.
