Best Itinerary for Visiting the Summer Palace in 2024 (With Tour Map)

Speaking of the Summer Palace, everyone should be familiar with this attraction. Today, I’ll introduce the tour route of the Summer Palace. In fact, many people don’t just want to visit the Summer Palace, but also want to see the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Yuanmingyuan Garden, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, etc. all at once.

1. Recommended Itinerary

Day 1:

Take the subway to Beijing North Station next to Xizhimen Subway Station in the morning and take the S2 tourist train (please check the train timetable before traveling – Yanqing Gateway: S2 Line Latest Timetable S2 Line Latest Timetable (effective from April 6, 2016). It’s hard to buy a ticket for immediate departure, the peak capacity is limited, please be prepared to take the next train; you may encounter vendors selling tickets for sightseeing plus cable car on the train, you can buy tickets at the scenic spot), or take the subway to Deshengmen Bus Station next to Jishuitan Subway Station and take bus 919 to the Great Wall (don’t believe the black car drivers who say there are no buses).

It’s best to return early, otherwise there won’t be enough time in the afternoon. Return to the city center and take the subway or bus to the next stop. Have lunch on the way.

Both the Summer Palace and the Yuanmingyuan Garden are imperial gardens. If you are short of time, you can choose one to visit. According to your requirements, you can visit both. Considering that you climbed the Great Wall in the morning, you can visit the Yuanmingyuan Garden in the afternoon due to physical limitations. Take the subway or bus from Xizhimen or Deshengmen to Yuanmingyuan.

Go home.

Day 2:

Take the subway to Xiyuan in the morning and enter the Summer Palace from the East Palace Gate.

Have lunch near the Summer Palace.

Take the subway from Beigongmen (exit from Beigongmen) or Xiyuan (exit from Donggongmen) subway station to Tiananmen East or West subway station. Visit Tiananmen Square and Tiananmen Gate, then enter the Forbidden City through Tiananmen Gate. You can take a bus to Wangfujing Pedestrian Street when you exit the Forbidden City.

If you have already booked a train ticket for that night, you can have dinner at the train station according to the time, or have dinner at Wangfujing Pedestrian Street and then go directly to the train station.

2. Route Map

This is the magnolia and peach blossom in Yulantan Hall, it’s really quite beautiful, especially when you enter, the fragrance of the magnolia will come to you, it feels very comfortable, makes you feel very relaxed, and there will be some breeze today, you will see some magnolia petals falling down, you will feel very artistic, these flowers grow in the book are not very regular, will make you think of a poem “Spring color all over the garden can not be kept, a red apricot out of the wall feeling, is that you will walk to a place will suddenly have a flower out of the feeling, the overall feeling is still good.

A foreign artifacts exhibition hall

This exhibition hall displays many foreign artifacts, including foreign carriages and white-painted plates, which I find very beautiful. There are also very large music boxes and early foreign pianos, which I find very beautiful and artistic, highlighting the avant-garde ideas and trends of the foreign countries.

Kunming Lake and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge

The last picture is the scenery of Kunming Lake, because Kunming Lake is very large, so I only took this one, the first one is the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, because of the haze today, it is not very clear, the second one is the dragon boat, it is from the Paoyun Palace to the South Lake and finally back to the Paoyun Palace.

3. Recommended Reasons

Because climbing the Great Wall is the most physically demanding, it is preferable to visit it when you first arrive in Beijing, when you are still full of energy.

Visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace are all quite physically demanding, so the most physically demanding Great Wall is paired with the less physically demanding Yuanmingyuan Garden, and the more physically demanding Summer Palace is paired with the more physically demanding Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

The Summer Palace and the Yuanmingyuan Garden are very close, but considering the overall situation, if you put the Summer Palace and the Yuanmingyuan Garden on one day and the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City on another day, the second day will be more demanding on your physical strength. Moreover, visiting the same type of attractions together will generally lead to a sense of fatigue for the second attraction. Actually, you still need to take a car from the Summer Palace to the Yuanmingyuan Garden, and the transportation cost is not saved either.

Whether it’s a tour group or an independent trip, taking the train out at night is the best option in terms of saving accommodation costs and travel time. Considering the location and traffic situation, Wangfujing is close to Beijing Station, and it’s the most convenient and fastest to go to Beijing South Station and Beijing West Station. Moreover, it’s in line with tourists’ habits and needs to buy souvenirs after the tour. So I put Wangfujing last.

Tiananmen Square is behind the Forbidden City, and Wangfujing is to the east of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. So it’s best to visit them together, the transportation distance is the shortest. When I used to be a tour guide at the Forbidden City, I would take tourists along the central axis, and after seeing them off at the north gate, Shenwu Gate, I would go back from the East Six Palaces or the West Six Palaces, exit the Forbidden City from the east gate, Donghua Gate, and walk directly past the Donghua Gate night market to Wangfujing Pedestrian Street.

Therefore, if you are staying with relatives or friends and have no accommodation cost, and you leave on the third day, and your physical strength is good, you can also visit the Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan Garden on one day and the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Wangfujing on another day, one day easy and one day hard.
