My hometown is in Huling Town, Rui’an, Zhejiang. I left my hometown to study and work for more than 20 years, but every time I come back, I can find different people, things or scenery, which makes me unable to stay away. In the past, I would like to stay in Rui’an city when I went home, accustomed to the convenience of the city, seeing classmates, eating and drinking, chatting and playing, food and hospitable classmates and relatives seemed to be the main theme of our wanderers returning home.

In recent years, I have been increasingly fond of staying at home in the town. Dad likes the quiet town, and he has been accustomed to life where everything is within a 5-minute walk. It is difficult for him to change and he does not want to change. Behind our house is the town government and kindergarten. Every day, Mom hears the children doing morning exercises in the morning and the parents, especially the grandparents, picking up their grandchildren in the afternoon. She can’t help but think about how perfect her life would be if her grandson went to kindergarten here.

Further down is the mountain. There are many tombs along the road to the mountain, which coexist harmoniously with many crops. Everyone seems to be used to this kind of life, without any fear or timidity.

Living on the side of the mountain, facing the water in the front and the mountain in the back, you can go to the vegetable market to buy vegetables in the morning. Many old women in the countryside come to sell vegetables they grow themselves, which are fresh and cheap. There are also many things that are rarely seen outside, such as kudzu root, Lycopus lucidus, and Radix Rehmanniae.

In the morning, I go to the fields and mountains to find some wild fun and chat with the old men and women in the fields. In the afternoon, I take a nap, my mother gets up to knit, my father plays mahjong or chess online, and I read. I go to bed early at night. For me, this is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and relax and recuperate.

Usually I like to climb the mountain behind the town government. I can climb it as soon as I leave home. This time I plan to climb Taiping Mountain. That was also a popular place for people in Huling Town to exercise in the morning when I was a kid.

It was a little after 7 in the morning. I walked from Huling Sunshine Vegetable Market towards Taiping Mountain. The scenery along the way always makes me feel very emotional: schools, houses, cemeteries, churches, temples, fields, and small mountains all together. From youth to old age, different faiths coexist harmoniously, different seasonal vegetables are growing, and ducks are quacking in the water. It has the span of life’s world and the breadth of the spiritual world, always making me feel awe at the tolerance of this land that gave birth to me and raised me.

At the foot of Taiping Mountain, Huling

Because of the new Ruifeng Highway, Taiping Mountain was split in half. To get there from this side, you need to cross Ruifeng Highway, and then there is a paved road for cars and a stone step path leading up the mountain. Along the way, there are birds singing and flowers blooming, with lush greenery and a quiet atmosphere. Only one or two elderly people were also leisurely strolling towards the top of the mountain. It didn’t take 10 minutes to reach the top of the mountain.

Further up the mountain, there is a small bamboo forest, with a few bamboo shoots already growing quite high. A few peach trees are scattered in the middle, with a tomb at the top and some vegetables planted. I sat down on a stone bench for a moment to rest and breathe deeply.

Maybe because of the shortness of breath from climbing the mountain, I can feel my heartbeat. I wanted to close my eyes and sit quietly and meditate, but there was a funeral being held on the other side of the mountain, with the sound of music from a brass band, and four dogs barked from the temple and ran up to see what was happening. They really know how to join in the fun!

After sitting for a while and breathing evenly, the sun was a bit strong and it was getting hot, so I decided to go to the temple to have a look. As I recall, I last went there to light incense and make offerings when I was in elementary school, with my mom.

The Taiping Temple at the top of the mountain is already quite dilapidated. The roof is partly collapsed, and it feels like it hasn’t been repaired in a long time. There are four dogs in the courtyard that barked at me, so I didn’t go in for a while. When I went down the mountain, the dogs were more harmonious with me and I could sit on the ground and sleep. I decided to go into the temple to have a look. There are candle stands and incense burners at the entrance. There is a well in the courtyard with two leisurely turtles inside.

When I saw the dilapidated temple, I felt even more inclined to go in and light some incense. I paid for incense, 10 yuan got me 5 pairs of candles and 10 incense sticks, plus another pair of candles that weighed one pound. I gave them 20 yuan and told them not to give me change, but they refused and insisted on giving it to me. They also told me separately where to light the candles.

The old woman, over 90 years old, lives here with her daughter. They have been guarding this temple for decades. Seeing that she is still agile and recites sutras clearly, reciting the Three Officials Sutra, her devout heart makes the dilapidated temple still peaceful and serene.

When I watched the Japanese movie “Little Forest,” I was particularly reminded of Huling. Inspired by the movie, I even went back home during the time my relatives harvested rice, just to experience the feeling of harvesting rice. How I long for the day when I can give up everything in the city and return to the countryside, living a simple life of working from sunrise to sunset, experiencing the true meaning of life.
