Xiqiao Mountain is one of the four famous mountains in Guangdong. This mountain, located in the Pearl River Delta region, would be easily overshadowed by many of China’s famous mountains if it relied solely on natural scenery. However, Xiqiao Mountain has unique advantages at night, making it an ideal place for weekend and holiday leisure activities.
What to visit on a one-day tour?
1. Nanhai Guanyin
The Nanhai Guanyin Cultural Park in Xiqiao Mountain is located at the top of Daxiandeng Peak, 290 meters above sea level. It covers an area of about two million square meters and consists mainly of a memorial archway, a screen wall, and a statue.
To the left and right of the park are Shuangma Peak and Ma’an Peak, respectively, with Dake Peak, the highest peak in Xiqiao Mountain, behind it, overlooking Daxiandeng Peak. This perfectly conforms to the best auspicious burial site pattern of “the left Green Dragon winding, the right White Tiger subduing, the back Black Tortoise hanging its head, and the front Vermilion Bird dancing.”
2. Baofeng Temple
Baofeng Temple in Xiqiao Mountain has a history of over 600 years and is one of the four famous temples in South China. It is a good place for tourism and praying for blessings. Since the eastward transmission of Buddhism in the Jin Dynasty, there have been many high monks who built temples and spread the Dharma in Xiqiao Mountain. By the Ming Dynasty, the temple was flourishing. Baofeng Temple gained considerable fame thanks to the teaching and spreading of the Dharma by Hui Lian, a Buddhist master. The temple was built in the first year of Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1404), and it was rebuilt in the 14th year of Chenghua (1479). Alas, this magnificent temple, having experienced the vicissitudes of time, now only has broken walls and remnants.
3. Tianhu Lake
Tianhu Lake is a volcanic crater lake on the northwest side of Xiqiao Mountain. It is surrounded by lush peaks on three sides and the lake water is clear and blue. The ring road around the lake is clean, and the lake is dotted with pavilions and trees, creating a naturally beautiful landscape. It is a good place for tourists to watch dragons, sail in boats, and enjoy the moon. On the north side of the lake, a Shuiyuexuan pavilion floats on the water, with eaves reaching for the clouds, and small boats snuggling alongside it. On the east and west banks are scattered pavilions with rich national characteristics, such as Baolongting Pavilion, Longzhuting Pavilion, Yitianting Pavilion, Banyuanting Pavilion, Daiyueting Pavilion, and Yuanyang Pavilion. A winding bridge crosses the lake on the east side, like a jade dragon lying on the waves, or like a string on a green plate.
4. Peach Garden
Peach Garden is the largest ornamental peach garden in the Pearl River Delta region. It covers an area of over 400 mu (approximately 66 acres) and has over 4,000 peach trees of over 100 varieties, including many rare varieties. When the peach blossoms are in full bloom, the whole mountain is covered in a crimson hue, making for a beautiful sight. The peach blossoms on Xiqiao Mountain are planted along the slopes, with each slope planted with a different variety. The red ones are as bright as red clouds, the white ones are as crystal-clear as snow. The most precious is a white peach blossom called Qingzhi Milun, with only ten trees. It is crystal-clear, pure as ice and jade, its fragrance permeating the air, charming and alluring. It is truly a peach blossom fairy.
5. Jiulongyan
Jiulongyan is located in the middle and south of Xiqiao Mountain, best representing the natural beauty of Xiqiao Mountain. Walking up the Jiulongyan trail, you can see ancient vines and trees everywhere, with unique shapes and forms, attracting attention. The main attractions in the scenic area include Zigujing Well, Jiulongyan, Zhanzi’s Lecture Hall, and Zhuhutai. Jiulongyan is located in the canyon next to Longzhao Peak. The stone walls on both sides are winding and convoluted. On the east wall, there are giant rocks naturally forming nine holes, winding and connected, with a clear exterior and a dark interior, high and low, leaning and rising. People enter from the outer hole, as if twisting in a snail shell, turning left and right, endlessly mysterious and exciting, and finally emerge from the top of the cliff, Tiantongya. Local legend says that “if you can go through the Jiulongyan hole, you will be lucky and live to be 99 years old.”
