Tibet Trekking Travel Guide: Scenic Spots Recommendations and Best Routes

Tibet is a place many friends in China aspire to travel to. Its mountains, lakes, and grasslands offer the most exquisite beauty, and it’s a perfect place for trekking. Below, we’ll recommend several super beautiful trekking destinations. Let’s plan a trip after the epidemic in Tibet is over!

1、Xixabangma: The Sky of the Himalayas

Xixabangma Peak is located in Nyalam County, Shigatse. Its main peak stands at 8,027 meters above sea level, ranking 14th among the world’s 14 8,000-meter peaks. It is also the only 8,000-meter peak entirely located in China. It is one of the famous peaks in the Himalayas.

Trekking in Xixabangma allows you to enjoy the ultimate scenic beauty of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and lakes. There are no crowded tents competing for campsites. Starting from the first stop, you are guaranteed to see snow-capped mountains. Here, snow-capped mountains, usually out of reach, will be very close to you.

If you are a snow mountain enthusiast, you must trek in Xixabangma. Here, gazing at the 8,000-meter snow-capped mountains won’t feel overwhelming due to its small vertical drop. The wide-open spaces make the snow-capped mountains here very approachable.

Furthermore, you can see the stunning wild Bokang ice pagoda forest during your trek in Xixabangma. And the high-altitude lakes, Gongco and Jalongco, will leave you mesmerized.

2、Gama Valley: The Call of the Ridge

Gama Valley, hailed as “the most beautiful valley in the world,” lies between Dingri County and Dinggye County in Shigatse. It boasts exceptionally rich natural landscapes. The most striking scenery in Gama Valley is the magnificent snow-capped mountains and plateau lakes.

This top-notch trekking route is a natural hiking corridor in the Himalayas. Here, you can see three 8,000-meter snow-capped mountains: Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, as well as a beautiful valley with a vertical drop of over 3,000 meters. The mountains are high and the valleys deep, with lush forests and vibrant flowers. It’s a pristine wilderness untouched by the outside world.

3、An earthly paradise: Kuragangri

Kuragangri is located in the Himalayas between China and Bhutan, the highest peak in the Tibetan highlands. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dotted with glaciers, it boasts countless lakes. Anyone who has been here will be awestruck by its magnificence.

Upon arrival, you’ll be immediately captivated by the contrasting landscapes on its north and south sides. The tall mountain range blocks the warm and humid air from the Indian Ocean, creating a warm and humid south side with abundant vegetation and three particularly charming lakes. The north side, on the other hand, resembles a world of ice and snow, steep and spectacular.

Compared to the previous two trekking routes, Kuragangri is more suitable for entry-level trekking enthusiasts. In 2017, Chen Kun led a team along this route. Access to this trekking route is also convenient. Loza County is just a day’s drive from Lhasa, passing by Yamdrok Yumtso and Pumoyumtso.

Trekking distance: Approximately 35km Trekking altitude: Average trekking altitude is about 4,700 meters.

Suitable for: Trekking enthusiasts (18-55 years old, physically fit)

4、The Lotus Secret Realm: Medog

Medog is located in southeastern Tibet, a small county town in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. The Medog trekking route was once named “China’s Top Ten Trekking Routes” by National Geographic. Trekking here allows you to deeply experience “heavenly eyes, hellish body.”

Unlike the previous three trekking routes, Medog has a typical subtropical humid climate and is located in the heart of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, resulting in a unique landscape with a significant canyon drop.

On your trek in Medog, you can not only admire the magnificent snow-capped mountains and cascading waterfalls but also cross high canyons, traverse ancient primeval forests, and wander through fragrant tea plantations.

The scenery here is incredibly diverse, with every landscape except for the ocean and desert. If you have the chance, Medog is a trekking destination you mustn’t miss.
