One Meter of Sunshine

“One Meter of Sunshine” Legend: The top of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang, Yunnan, is shrouded in clouds all year round. Even on the clearest days, the sun has difficulty penetrating the clouds. Legend has it that the autumn equinox is the day when the sun and moon meet and shine together, and only in extremely rare moments can one see a meter-long beam of sunlight shining on the mountaintop, a scene of great tranquility and beauty. On that day, the gods will bestow upon the world the most perfect love sunshine.
If a couple can bathe in this fleeting and precious sunlight, they will receive eternal love…… For a lifetime, true, brilliant and unforgettable love is fleeting, just like this “one meter of sunshine”! “The eternity that cannot be achieved in a lifetime may solidify at one point; the brilliance that cannot be possessed in a lifetime may exist only within that one meter.”

I have always had a certain affection for the TV drama “One Meter of Sunshine”, and I once obtained the novel of the same name, but I never read it. I watched a few episodes of the TV series intermittently, always wanting to finish it in one go, to make up for my curiosity and shortcomings from my youth. This time, I finally got my wish.

A Corner of Lijiang Ancient City

I used to think it was a work by Hai Yan, which is also why I have been thinking about it. I am a fan of Hai Yan’s works, and his works never disappoint, and I didn’t want to miss this one.

Why did I have this misunderstanding? Because the drama was broadcast on Shandong TV in 2004. I watched a few episodes intermittently, suspense, conspiracy, struggle for inheritance, love, revenge, handsome men and beautiful women, very much in line with Hai Yan’s dramas, so I have always wanted to take some time to enjoy it properly. Later, I found out that the screenwriter was Li Wei, not Hai Yan. I had been mistaken for so many years.

The plot of the drama is very simple. Yi Chuanxia, for love and her lover, altered the will of the chairman of the Nian family, giving the property that belonged to the young master Nian Lilun to his uncle Nian Liangxiu. Haunted by guilt, she meets the bartender Jin Zhengwu in Shanghai. Under her lover’s mistrust and her own self-blame, she commits suicide in Lijiang, leaving Jin Zhengwu with endless confusion and regret. Later, Yi Aiyuan, who looks like her sister Chuanxia, investigates and retaliates against Jin Zhengwu to find out the truth. In the end, she chooses love amidst the tangled relationships between Nian Lilun and Jin Zhengwu. Interwoven with this are the love stories of A Xia Li, Xiu Ding, Mila, and others.

This TV drama is still very watchable, with a good mix of love, suspense, and other selling points. The pairing of handsome men and beautiful women such as He Run Dong, Yin Xiaotian, and Sun Li is also very pleasing to the eye. It can be said that it achieved the effect of a “Hai Yan drama” that is so real it’s almost fake.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The drama was filmed in Lijiang, Yunnan, Shanghai, and Vancouver. Sometimes it’s the small town of Yunnan, with its gurgling streams, cobblestone paths bathed in the setting sun, ancient and poetic wooden buildings, the gentle and slow-paced time of Lijiang, ethereal and refined, captivating and unforgettable; sometimes it’s the modern metropolis of towering skyscrapers, forever dazzling glass walls, steel, concrete, and concrete, high-rise buildings, hard, cold, and the bright lights of Shanghai nightlife, the detail-oriented bars, the seemingly intoxicating nightlife of Shanghai, and the exotic and colorful Vancouver, making you dazzled.

Despite being a romantic idol drama, “One Meter of Sunshine” tells stories of extraordinary love based on love psychology. However, everyone is also lost, with fatalism and the law of karma pervading the story, making it feel mysterious. The constant shifting changes between Shanghai, Lijiang, and Vancouver also make people feel like the changes are too rapid. Thankfully, it’s a TV series, otherwise, the constant traveling alone would make people dizzy.

I like this angle of Lijiang Ancient City

This is not the first time I’ve seen a story about Lijiang, but it’s the one that made the biggest impression on me. I believe many people were first introduced to Lijiang through this TV series, making them even more eager to visit it.

Back then, I longed to go to Lijiang, largely because of this TV series. In fact, I still long to go now, or perhaps have always longed to go. But watching this TV series today doesn’t evoke the same passion and infatuation I felt back then. After all, I’m not as young as I used to be.

What comes to mind when you think of Yunnan? Ancient and mysterious primeval forests, the song and dance of various ethnic groups, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Shangri-La, Dali, Lijiang… how many people yearn for a spontaneous trip, a love story, a romantic encounter… It seems like these are all we can imagine.

Blue Skies and White Clouds over the Ancient City

I have seen the imagery of “Impression Lijiang,” created by the “Iron Triangle” of Zhang Yimou, Wang Chaoge, and Fan Yue, using the mountain as the backdrop, folk culture as the theme, and local farmers as actors, on the open-air stage of the Blue Moon Valley Theater in Ganhai Zi, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, at an altitude of 3100 meters. It authentically showcases the locals’ feelings for heaven, earth, people, and mountains.

Beyond the shock and the cleansing of the soul, there is a sense of sacredness. I imagine that watching it live would make one’s soul leave their body. I look forward to seeing it.

I haven’t been, and I don’t know if I ever will. I yearn to go, but I’m also afraid. I’m afraid that getting closer will disappoint me. Maybe years of excessive commercial development have left it smelling of money.

Actually, it’s not this TV series that I’ve been thinking about all these years. It’s Yunnan, Lijiang, or the scenery and stories there.

Some places can only be yearned for, some stories can only be imagined, and love is a legend, yet it’s not just a legend.
