There are several very famous small cities around Madrid, such as Segovia, Torette and El Escorial.

Segovia and Torette are both cultural heritage towns, while El Escorial is a place I learned about while traveling and reading Linda’s “Travel Notes of Spain”. I didn’t do any research before, so I could only choose two places to play roughly. In the end, I decided to go to El Escorial and Segovia.

El Escorial is not a popular attraction in Madrid, but Linda’s book puts this place in the supreme position. “If you only have one day in Spain, you should go to El Escorial.” Tourism is sometimes emotional. Because of a sentence in the book, I went to El Escorial. In fact, the main attraction in the area is the El Escorial Palace. Because it has a close relationship with the origin of the Spanish royal family, its status is naturally important. In Linda’s book, the author once drove to the distant mountains and looked out at the whole town. However, I don’t have the conditions for self-driving tours, so I can only participate in the interior of the El Escorial Palace. Tourism is sometimes emotional, and emotional choices are not necessarily correct. The El Escorial Palace may be a very important attraction, it is connected to Spanish history, but for me, a tourist who knows little about Spanish history, it was a disappointment. This is no different from other palaces and museums, only the study and globes inside impressed me. After all, I’m not Linda, I have studied Spanish history for a long time, and then came to this city. I have to say, I wasted half a day in vain. But perhaps this is a lesson. Travel is not really “sleeping on the bus and taking pictures when you get off the bus”, because you understand, it is more meaningful. Travel ten thousand miles, but also read ten thousand volumes. The meaning of the El Escorial Palace to me is probably seeing my own ignorance.

That afternoon, I returned to Madrid and immediately set off for Segovia. It is worth mentioning that the local area has made very comprehensive arrangements for tourism around Madrid. There are buses to destinations around the area every day. Unfortunately, I, who was in a hurry, caught a slow bus. But as the saying goes, “what you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts”, the bus circled the Spanish countryside for a long time, allowing me to enjoy the scenery of the Spanish countryside. Along the way, I saw many strange rocks, I don’t even know where they came from. I don’t know where it rained, but along the way, I vaguely saw a rainbow in the distance, which was magical!

The main attraction in Segovia is the ancient Roman aqueduct. I have seen the aqueduct in southern France and have some general concept, but I still want to see the aqueduct in Segovia. When I arrived in Segovia, it was dusk, and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to see the attraction I was looking forward to, so I ran all the way there. As I ran, the ancient Roman aqueduct I had been thinking about suddenly appeared in front of me! It is so magnificent, I need to look up to see it up and down. I can’t see where the end is, so I can only walk under the aqueduct, along the pillars, looking for the end little by little, and at the same time, let my heart that is looking up slowly release. In the search for historical relics, from dusk to twilight, my heart was only satisfied at this moment.

Coming back to my senses, I realized that there were still castles and churches on the hill in Segovia that I could visit, so I quickly went up the hill. The small hill in Segovia is interesting, with European cross roads along the way, and the sky is raining a little, which is also a bit romantic. Unfortunately, I went too late, and I could only visit the periphery of the castle and the church. However, the impact of the aqueduct still made me feel happy.

Maybe because I was in a good mood, I wanted to take a new road down the mountain. In the dim light, I unknowingly took a wrong turn. When I realized it, I had completely left the castle area and walked onto the highway. I was already exhausted, and I could only look up at the castle. On the road outside, street lights had already come on. Besides me, who was still walking hard on the road, there were only passing vehicles. In such an unfamiliar place, I still dare not take a ride casually, so I can only walk with my head down. I know I can walk to the foot of the mountain along this road, but how long it will take is unknown. This place is sparsely populated, which also gave me a little fear in my heart. At this moment, I suddenly heard a quick footstep behind me. In the deep mountains and old forests, it’s okay if there is only one person, but it’s scary if there is one more person. I was startled, held my breath and dared not look back. Could it be some villain?! Before I could react, the footsteps behind me passed by. It turned out to be someone who was out for a run at night. I was relieved, and I was already unable to walk. Now I wanted to collapse on the ground. Solo travel is very charming, but safety is the first priority.

There is a famous restaurant called Horono Deasar at the foot of the mountain, and its roast suckling pig is very famous. In the second half of the journey, I was basically thinking about the roast suckling pig while walking. Horono Deasar did not disappoint me. It is very old and has a sense of time, just like the kind of old Shanghai restaurant that old-fashioned people often go to. The exquisite restaurant gave me a sense of time travel, as if I had fallen from the mountain into another time and space. It was so elegant that I dared not touch it easily, and only the taste of the roast suckling pig was real. After a few glasses of Sangria (Spanish specialty fruit wine) to calm my nerves, I slowly came back to my senses.
