Xi’an, this ancient city with a long history, has always been a condensation of the essence of Chinese history. There are also many ancient relics and attractions here, which are very worth visiting. So, what are the fun places to visit in Xi’an on a self-guided tour? What should you pay attention to?
Best time to travel?
Xi’an has four distinct seasons, with a mild climate and moderate rainfall. Spring is warm, dry, and windy; summer is hot and rainy with plenty of sun protection; autumn is cool, temperate, and humid; winter is dry and cold, with fog and less snow. It can be said that all four seasons are suitable for travel, with the best travel time being in spring and autumn.
Train stations: There are three: Xi’an Railway Station, Xi’an South Railway Station, and Xi’an North Railway Station. Xi’an Railway Station is the most convenient, so it is recommended that you prioritize this station. Xi’an North Railway Station is for high-speed trains, and South Station is not convenient.
Airport: Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, it takes about an hour and a half to get to the city by taxi from the airport, which costs about 120 to 150 yuan. Transferring by bus or subway takes about two hours. There is also an airport bus for 26 yuan per person.
Tourist attractions
Xi’an’s attractions can be divided into natural and cultural attractions, which can be summarized in five words: “East, West, Hua, North, City”.
East Line: Attractions mainly include the Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace (Huaqing Pool/Lishan Mountain), and Lintong Museum, taking one day.
West Line: Attractions mainly include Hanyangling, Qianling Mausoleum, Crown Prince’s Tomb, Princess’ Tomb, Famen Temple, and the Palace Treasure Museum, taking one day.
Hua: refers to Mount Hua, attractions mainly include East Peak, South Peak, West Peak, North Peak, Middle Peak, and South Peak Cableway and North Peak Cableway (it is recommended to take the cableway up and down to save energy, climbing is too tiring), taking one day.
North Line: Attractions mainly include the Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River, the Yellow Emperor’s Mausoleum/Xuanyuan Temple, Yan’an Zaoyuan/Yangjialing/Baota Mountain/Nandanwan, taking two days.
City: refers to the city center, main attractions include the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the North Square (Musical Fountain), the South Square, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda Underground Palace, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the Silk Road Cultural Station, the Bell and Drum Tower, the Datang Everbright City, the Ming City Wall, the Datang Furong Garden, the Daming Palace, the Forest of Steles Museum, the Shaanxi History Museum, Shuyuanmen, the Qujiangchi Site Park, the Muslim Street, the Yongxingfang, etc., taking 1 to 2 days.
Friendly reminder: The biggest problem with traveling to Xi’an is that the attractions are far away, there are many attractions, and they are scattered. Some attractions are real-name reservation systems. From April to October, summer, and holidays are all crowded with tourists, so you must book in advance. Therefore, you must plan reasonably to save time, effort, and money. It is generally recommended to play for 3 to 4 days. If you have more time, you can visit more attractions. For the general public who don’t have a lot of time, you can choose to visit a few of the most important attractions.
