Langkawi is the largest group of islands in Malaysia. If you’re looking for a beach getaway, this is the place to be. The Dragon Boat Festival has passed, but there’s no need to worry because there are other holidays. It’s time to get ready!
A 3-day weekend without taking time off work can feel awkward, but this time, I didn’t want to stay at home. I planned a trip that felt both familiar and new.
Familiar, because it’s not my first time in Malaysia, I even lived there for a while, so the culture and food feel like home.
New, because it’s my first visit to this long-known resort island, Langkawi. Years ago, I missed it when I was in Penang, which is just across the sea.
To make the trip more cost-effective, I arranged for my parents to have a free trip to Kuala Lumpur first. There are plenty of one-day tours/car services available.
I finished work on 4.29 and went straight to the airport. The red-eye flight met up with me in Langkawi.
This was my first time flying AirAsia (a low-cost airline). The tickets were cheap, and most importantly, it was a red-eye flight. It took off at 4.29 am and arrived before 10:00 am the same day, so I didn’t need to take time off work. Perfect for someone with no time off.
Low-cost Airline Tips:
You can bring one piece of carry-on luggage, 7kg, no weighing. Checked baggage is charged separately.
You cannot choose seats (although you can pay extra to choose a seat).
There are no drinks or food included, but you can buy them on the plane. The prices are reasonable, a set meal costs less than 20RM; a single beverage is 4-12RM, cheaper than prices at domestic airports. There are more food and drink options than usual airplane meals (although you need to book online in advance and there are discounts, if you order on the plane, there will be fewer options). It’s also more tempting.
Blankets are also rented separately.
It’s best to bring your own books or a pad to pass the time on the plane.
Langkawi Airport
Cheap red-eye flights should be combined with a resort hotel that offers good resting options, so you can easily spend time in the hotel.
Since I was with family, I booked a family suite at the Four Seasons, a standalone villa by the sea. Expectations are high.
