Wangmu City’s geographical location is quite remote, deep in the mountains. It is mostly quiet, only becoming lively on certain days. However, regardless of the situation, its appearance has always remained unchanged. This is a beautiful gift from nature, and today we will introduce the beauty of this place.
Lichuan Wangmu City Temple Fair
Every year in the middle of the sixth lunar month, during the temple fair season, it is the liveliest time of the year. Pilgrims from all directions come here with their hopes and dreams. Some come to pray, some come to fulfill vows, and many come because they have something on their minds. The road here is not easy. It typically takes seven to eight hours of strenuous travel. This is because it is deep in the mountains. During peak season, over 10,000 people visit each day. The only path leading up the mountain is crowded and packed. The temple at the top of the mountain becomes a city that never sleeps. It is truly a sight to behold, a place of great wonder and beauty, often found in remote and challenging locations.
What is Wangmu City like?
From Lichuan City, we arrive at Jiannan Township. Locals say that you haven’t truly been to Wangmu City until you’ve seen the sunrise. So, this time we chose to ascend Wangmu City at night, arriving at the top before sunrise to witness a different kind of mountain sunrise. The surrounding mountains are faintly visible, their outlines stretching out into the distance. The shadows of the trees sway, rustling gently, and countless frogs croak in harmony. It is quite a distance before we encounter a village, its lights glowing dimly. Looking up, we see the twinkling stars, guiding our path forward. At that moment, we realized that our purpose was not just to attend the temple fair, but to make a pilgrimage.
The mountain path to Wangmu City
It is a mountain surrounded on all sides by steep cliffs. The only way to climb is through a small path on the northwest side. The path is entirely paved with stone steps, totaling over 20,000 steps. The steps are incredibly narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time, and in many places, you can only walk sideways. The steps are also very steep, with few level areas, mostly vertical ascents and descents. Climbing at night, we couldn’t see the surrounding scenery or the cliffs, only the stone steps beneath our feet reflecting a bluish-white glow in the starlight. This is a very difficult task for those who don’t exercise regularly or have not climbed mountain paths before. We stopped to rest several times along the way, but we still felt tired.
Many pilgrims who climb the mountain will enjoy delicious vegetarian meals at the top before reluctantly leaving.
The path is impermanent, but we must keep moving forward. Bidding farewell to Wangmu City, we return to the bustling world.
