What to do in Kathmandu and where is Kathmandu

Perhaps everyone has their own piece of sacred land in their hearts. It is a place where one travels alone, a utopia in my heart. That place is Nepal. After ten years, when my dreams became reality, I decided to go to the place I’ve always longed for, with my family, to see what kind of country it really is.

Close Encounter with Monkeys at Monkey Temple

This place once experienced a major earthquake that destroyed many iconic buildings. The meaning of rebuilding is no longer great, so the tourism industry here has plummeted. But even so, it couldn’t diminish my yearning for this place. After seeing the earthquake situation here before, I was very worried, but my thoughts never changed. I was thinking at that time that even if many exquisite buildings were no longer there, it would be good to go there to get some sunshine and breathe the fresh air. There are fewer tourists on the way, there are various shrines everywhere, colorful saris, intertwined wires in the air, dogs sunbathing on the ground, children who treat any place as a playground… these are all signs of Kathmandu.

Curious Baby Feels Local Culture

Every day, I feel like I’m walking through a museum with ornate beams and paintings. The bumpy road and the flying dust make many local residents and foreign tourists wear various masks. Because it is the rainy season, the storms always come unexpectedly, but you can still see many locals don’t mind it, they can still walk calmly in the rain without an umbrella. Yeah, what are you afraid of? I couldn’t imagine what kind of person would wash the dirt off their feet in a puddle by the roadside after the rain, would greet the gods in their hearts every morning after waking up, would sit in a square full of bricks and tiles all day long… All these things show that this is a group of people who are calm and rich in their hearts.

It is said that the medical conditions in Nepal are poor and expensive to see a doctor. I’m curious how they would handle it if they got sick, after all, most people don’t have money. The enthusiastic taxi driver said they would pray to God, asking God to alleviate the pain. As a medical student, I was really shocked by this method. Similarly, when their family members die, they will not cry, because it is only a body that has died, God will bless their souls to go to the Pure Land, as for this body, it should be returned to nature. When it comes to dealing with death and nature, maybe we need to learn from them.

Little Girl Feeding Pigeons

When I first arrived in Kathmandu, my children needed to adapt to the jet lag and the unfamiliar environment. In the evening, the little ones were too excited to go to sleep. I turned on the TV to find some programs suitable for children, but I was surprised to find that there were 5 different channels about religious beliefs. No wonder they could calmly stay in the ruins and debris after the earthquake for two years, people are content with their current lives.

Children on the Construction Site

Since I became a mother, I’ve developed a habit of looking at children when I walk on the street. In economically underdeveloped countries, the innocence and vitality of children are more obvious than in cities. They will shyly ask you if you can give them half a bottle of Coke, they will run around barefoot by the roadside, and they will pull your hand and tell you where you can draw Mehndi. They were born without a life of luxury, without imported milk powder, without early education classes, without playgrounds, without Lego blocks, and even without a home with four walls, but just when you are about to cry for these children, Nepal will silently tell you, don’t cry, look, Mahakala defeated the devil, the power of God is so immeasurable, he is there, knowing everything. Because of God, there is no utilitarian education here, no anxious parents, and no confused children in the future; because of God, there is no animal abuse here, no robbery, no horrific events…

Mahakala and the Worshippers

The stories of the gods have been passed down for generations in this country. Although there are thousands of incarnations of the gods, they have already lived in people’s hearts. They live every day with reverence under the protection of the God in their hearts, following the laws of nature, no matter what, it’s a happy thing!

This reminds me of a foreign friend of mine who once asked me if I had faith. I said I probably didn’t, if I did, it would be Buddha. Then he said that in foreign countries, you should never say that you have no faith, otherwise everyone around you will think you are a terrorist. Of course, I don’t want to make any comments here, but for Kathmandu, which has experienced such a big disaster and whose economy is relatively underdeveloped, it is not a bad thing. After all, if you have faith in your heart, you will be full of hope, you will have a little more comfort, and less unhappiness, isn’t it a good thing?
