Shanghai’s Dishui Lake is a truly beautiful place. You won’t find any of the typical city grime or pollution here. It’s a rare oasis in Shanghai, with a very high percentage of green space and vegetation. It boasts excellent natural protection values. Below, I’ll share some of the fun things to do at Dishui Lake.
I went there during the May Day holiday a while back. May Day is only a three-day holiday, so I just took a trip around Shanghai. It turned out to be a great surprise. Unfortunately, I’ve been really busy ever since then. I’ve finally had a chance to organize my pictures before the Dragon Boat Festival. Hopefully, this can help out any friends planning on going on a trip during the festival.
Island hopping is a big part of traveling independently along China’s southeast coast. The islands around Zhejiang and Fujian are so beautiful. I’ve been to Yushan Island and Xiamen before, and I’ve also been planning a trip to Dongji Island and the Zhoushan Islands for a while. I never thought I’d find an island near my home in Shanghai that I could explore on a weekend. And even better, you don’t have to take a boat!!! That’s a big deal for me since I get seasick so easily. Having to take a boat also means you have to plan your time carefully.
On the first day, I went to Dishui Lake. On the second day, I went to Yangshan Island. Transportation is a breeze, no worries. Since we didn’t leave Shanghai proper, we could do it all with the metro, buses, and Didi. No need to worry about rushing. Here are some photos (I’m not sure how to change the photo order in JianShu, just look at them as they are).
The sea at Yangshan Island. The weather was beautiful.
The sun was strong, but the wind was also strong. It wasn’t hot at all.
I did a ninja jump. I was the only one around, so I could be my dorky self and not be embarrassed.
Let’s just be normal.
Native succulents on the island. And a grasshopper that wasn’t scared of people. It didn’t even jump away when I touched it. Maybe it was just too scared.
The end of Yangshan Island. What do you think, isn’t it pretty with nobody around?
A path on the island. The old, worn-out wooden railings actually make it prettier.

Looking out at the East Sea Bridge from the island.
A long goodbye to the Yangshan deep-water port container terminal.
A corner of Yangshan Island.
On the East Sea Bridge.

A corner of Dishui Lake at night. I just rode around on a shared bike.
The road around Dishui Lake. So few people and cars. It’s so nice.
Reeds and the sunset by Dishui Lake.
A dusk by the sea, a path, a dog, and a ton of mosquitos.
Sunset in Lingang.
I can’t explain this one, I just think it’s beautiful.
