Tianning Temple was built during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and was then called “Guanglin Temple,” making it one of the oldest temples in Beijing. In the Tang Dynasty, the temple was called “Tianwang Temple”. In the early Ming Dynasty, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty ordered the temple to be rebuilt, and the temple was renamed “Tianning Temple” when it was rebuilt during the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty. It was rebuilt again during the Zhengde and Jiajing periods of the Ming Dynasty and the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.
