The Magnolia liliiflora behind the Leshou Hall and the Magnolia denudata south of the Yaoyue Gate at the east end of the Long Corridor were planted by Emperor Qianlong during the construction of the Qingyi Garden, over 200 years ago. In 2018, the “Ancient Magnolia” was even named one of the “Top 10 Most Beautiful Trees in Beijing”. Empress Dowager Cixi was a lover of flowers and had magnolias planted all over her garden. During the flowering season, they formed a forest of white, hence the name “Sea of Fragrant Snow”. The magnolias here embody the charm of the ancient capital and add a touch of cultural heritage.
