Hulunbuir’s tourism has indeed become popular in recent years and is becoming known to more and more people. However, I want to say that, an unknown small town in Inner Mongolia, every trip home brings me great comfort.
About 70 kilometers away from Hailar, the center of Hulunbuir, there is a small town called Yiminhe Town. Yimin is a transliteration of the Mongolian language. If I remember correctly, it should be the lush grass by the river. The town is not big and is surrounded by endless grasslands. It is also named Yiminhe Town because the Yimin River flows through the town.
The town has only been around for a few decades since the arrival of the first residents. The town is small and the population is not large. If you can look down from above, this grassland is really just a small piece compared to the vast grassland. When you travel to a place, it seems you always have to tell a story about it, such as what attractions are there, what historical sites are there, what celebrities are there, what culture is there. But for Yimin, it seems that besides the grassland, there is nothing else that can be considered a tourist attraction, but it can bring you psychological comfort.
Here, the summer days always dawn very early. I like to go for a walk in the morning. The fresh air fills my lungs, sweet and refreshing. I walk to the dairy village next to the town to buy fresh milk. The people who buy milk every morning seem to have become a sight here, most of them are vigorous old people, who regard it as morning exercise. They walk all the way to buy milk and then go home to have breakfast. The old people on the road are kind and approachable. Even if you don’t know them, they will smile at you warmly like the morning sun. If you chat with any of the old people along the way, they can tell you about the changes they have seen in Yimin, the history of the town they have experienced, and the stories of how they built this place.
I like watching the sunset here. There is grassland next to the town, with endless views. Squinting my eyes, I look into the distance, the sunset reddens the sky, the setting sun is like a ball of fire, at first it is a bit dazzling, the sun jumps down, and then it becomes a soft orange-red.
I like to take a walk on the edge of the town in the evening. There is a straight road built in the middle of the grassland. Many people choose to walk here. The evening sky has many layers. First it is blue, then there is a white transition, then it is pink, then it is blue again. Cattle and sheep graze leisurely on the grasslands on both sides, occasionally I hear the sound of horseshoes and a few neighs. It’s so peaceful here. The sound of larks rises and falls, very crisp.
Due to its special geographical location, the food here is very diverse. Of course, you can eat hand-held meat, roast whole lamb, mutton hotpot, and other delicacies. You can also eat authentic Northeastern dishes, such as pot-wrapped meat, braised pork slices, stewed chicken with mushrooms, pork stewed with vermicelli, the portions are so large that they are amazing! Russian-style Western food, Korean cold noodles are also popular among the local people.
The local customs here are very simple. You don’t have to worry about any deception when asking for directions or buying things. Everyone you meet will show their heartfelt enthusiasm.
Go fishing by the Yimin River, sing, skip stones, and finally set up a stove to grill the freshly caught fish. The fish is tender and delicious, with a crispy exterior and tender interior. Add some cumin, sesame seeds and chili peppers to taste. It’s really not a word can describe.
Yimin is so peaceful, peaceful that there are few cars and pedestrians on the street, peaceful that listening to birds singing is not a luxury, peaceful that sparrows can stroll leisurely, peaceful that when you walk on the grassland and look back at the town, it is like a paradise appearing before your eyes.
