Viewing Time/Butterfly Species:
April to May is the season with the most diverse butterfly species in the Ma’an Di area. Many rare and unique butterflies, such as the Birdwing Butterfly, Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing, Cairns Birdwing, Green Birdwing, Common Indian Crow, Scarlet Jezebel, Common Tiger, and Purple Banded Awl, can be found here during this time.
June to July, within the 10+ areas at 900-1500 meters above sea level where Chinese Phyllostachys pubescens bamboo grows in Ma’an Di, you can see the Arrow-winged Butterfly, the butterfly species that causes the massive butterfly explosion, flying all over the place. You can also see rare butterflies such as the Leaf Butterfly, Leopard Lacewing, and Swallowtail Butterfly during this period.
September to October, at elevations between 1300-3000 meters, you can see rare butterflies like the Bhutan Glory.

The butterfly explosion in Butterfly Valley refers to the mass emergence of Arrow-winged Butterflies from late May to June, when they congregate in vast numbers, creating a spectacular sight in the mountains, along streams, and on forest trails. Yang Zhenwen, a butterfly monitor in Jinping, Red River, Yunnan, says that this phenomenon, as far as current reports go, only occurs in two locations in the world: one is in Mexico on the other side of the world, and the other is in the Ma’an Di area of Jinping, Red River, China.
