Located in Zhangjiakou, Zhangbei Grassland Sky Road is a place with beautiful natural scenery. It is also a paradise for many self-driving enthusiasts, a great place for leisure, sightseeing, and tourism. So, how should you plan a 2-day self-driving tour from Beijing to Zhangbei Grassland Sky Road?

D1: Beijing – Huapiling – Grassland Sky Road No. 66 Ranch
D2: No. 66 Ranch – Yehuoling – Beijing
Route Introduction
Zhangbei Grassland Sky Road is divided into two lines, east and west, with Yehuoling on the Zhangshi Expressway as the boundary:
The west line is about 30 kilometers long, with many curves, starting from Yehuoling in the east and ending at Bailongdong in the west. Along the way, there are scenic spots such as Jiguan Mountain Station observation deck, Bailongdong, and the Dagedashi column group.
The east line is about 100 kilometers long, with a total travel time of 3 hours, and has many steep slopes. It starts from Huapiling (about 30 kilometers from Huapiling to Chongli) in the east and ends at Yehuoling in the west. Along the way, there are Yanpian Mountain, wind turbines, and northern terraced fields.
Accommodation
No. 66 Ranch Farmhouse, located 23 kilometers from the Huapiling entrance. You can wake up leisurely the next morning to watch the sunrise and the cattle and sheep on the hillside. Then, continue to Yehuoling. Because you are staying in the scenic area, there are not many cars on the road when you start, avoiding the big traffic jams on the Grassland Sky Road on weekends. You can quietly enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Vehicle
From the Huapiling entrance to the accommodation location, there are many steep slopes and sharp curves. The road to Yehuoling in the second half is relatively gentle. During this trip, all three cars in the team had their chassis scratched. It is best to choose a vehicle with a high chassis. At the first steep slope after entering the Huapiling entrance, the only manual transmission vehicle in the team started to slip because the handbrake was not working well. This is a reminder for self-driving tourists coming to the Grassland Sky Road, as most of the scenic area consists of steep slopes and sharp turns. When there is a traffic jam, cars are packed closely together. If you are a novice driver and have poor driving skills, it is best to choose a manual transmission vehicle.
Transportation
Outbound (entering from Huapiling): Navigate to No. 66 Ranch. Drive 161 kilometers from Qinghe toll station on G6 Expressway in the direction of Zhangjiakou, enter Zhangcheng Expressway in the direction of Chongli, drive 62 kilometers, take the Chongli exit and turn right, enter S242 provincial road and drive 32 kilometers, there will be a T-junction, turn left to enter X001 Grassland Sky Road east section east entrance, Huapiling.
Return (return to Beijing from Yehuoling): Zhangshi Expressway, Yehuoling toll station, towards Zhangjiakou and Beijing.
Note:
Self-driving tourists from Tianjin can choose to take Beijing’s Sixth Ring Road and then G6 Expressway towards Zhangjiakou;
Be sure to take the ticket at the toll station when leaving Beijing. It is used at Zhangjiakou North;
