When I was a child, I didn’t understand. I thought everyone lived the same way as me. Everyone in the world spoke Chinese. Later I learned how naive I was. Finally, I seized the opportunity and spent my honeymoon in Sanya, Hainan after my wedding.

I got married on May Day. The weather in China at that time was rainy and gloomy. I remember wearing a jacket before I left. When the plane arrived at Sanya Phoenix Airport, I got off the plane, the incredibly bright sunshine made me unable to open my eyes, as if I had arrived in another world. I had never seen such a bright sky. The golden latitude of 18 degrees north is well-deserved. The tour guide said this is the place God loves most, because there are 300 sunny days a year.

There are three things you can’t miss in Sanya, one is to enjoy the coastal scenery, one is to taste tropical fruits, and the other is to eat delicious seafood.

1, Tropical coastal scenery makes you feel like you’re in paradise

I remember three attractions the most: Dadonghai, Nanshan Guanyin (Tianya Haijiao), and Wuzhizhou Island.

I was still on the bus, and I was marvelling at the countless coconut trees, palm trees, and the faintly visible coastline. The tour guide was rambling on about the precautions, when the sea slowly came into view, we all couldn’t stay calm. We all pulled back the curtains and shouted, “It’s the sea!” The tour guide said this is the Coconut Dream Corridor, with a total length of 20 kilometers. The beach is gentle and has a beautiful curve. It is a good place to stroll at night. It connects to Sanya city and is very convenient to get around.

The tour guide said this attraction is very ordinary. There are beautiful scenery everywhere in Sanya. After lunch, he took us to the real attractions. We couldn’t wait to see the sea, so we finished lunch quickly and followed the tour guide.

We could hear the sound of the waves crashing on the beach from afar. We knew the sea was near. I pulled my husband and excitedly went to the first attraction: Dadonghai. For the first time in my life, I saw the sea, the blue sky and sea, surrounded by coconut groves, white sand and shallow water, I spread my arms and shouted, “Sanya, I’m here!” The sea stretched as far as the eye could see, the turquoise water and the azure sky merged into one, so vast, I felt like I was in heaven. I took off my shoes, stepped on the soft sand, and walked into the sea. The waves kept rolling at my feet.

Legend has it that long ago, a black dragon lived in Luobifeng’s Luobidong. The black dragon fell in love with the blue waves and white waves of Dadonghai, the clear sky and the calm sea. He asked the Dragon King to give it to him. However, as soon as the black dragon arrived, it brought a typhoon. Dadonghai became stormy and the fishermen couldn’t go out to sea. Later, the Dragon King no longer allowed the black dragon to play in the water, and Dadonghai became calm again.

02 Nanshan Guanyin (Tianya Haijiao)

The next stop is the place that lovers envy and yearn for – Tianya Haijiao. Being able to reach the ends of the earth symbolizes being together forever. Therefore, Tianya Haijiao is a must-see scenic spot in Sanya.

I first saw Nanshan Guanyin on the plane. Because this statue of Guanyin is so huge, you can clearly see it when the plane is about to land. Nanshan Guanyin was built in 1996 and completed after more than a year. It is 33 meters high and weighs more than 70 tons. Because it is built on the seashore, it is called “Floating Guanyin” and “Living Buddha of the Sea and Sky”. I was very shocked when I saw it. It felt so grand, in front of her I felt like an ant, so small. It is said that Guanyin has thousands of hands and thousands of faces, so Nanshan Guanyin also has three faces. I walked around her in a circle and asked her to bless me with a fat son, and sure enough, I got a chubby baby later. There is a good saying there: “Nanshan Guanyin is compassionate to the world, the new scenery of Putuoshan shines brightly throughout the ages.”

Not far from Nanshan Guanyin is Tianya Haijiao. Tianya and Haijiao are two attractions. My travel companions said that you can only go to one of these two attractions, not both. I asked why. He replied, “If you go to both Tianya Haijiao, then there will be nowhere else to go. It means that you have reached the end of your life.” Of course I didn’t believe that. I thought that I had to see all the attractions since I came here. After seeing them, I found that there was no difference. It is just two huge rocks, one with “Tianya” engraved on it, and the other with “Haijiao” engraved on it. The lines from the romance dramas always say, “If you are willing, I will go to the ends of the earth with you, if you speak, I will wait for you at the ends of the earth.” I feel strangely romantic about this place.

03 Wuzhizhou Island

I used to always associate “Wuzhi”zhou Island with “centipede.” I thought that even if the island wasn’t crawling with centipedes, at least the shape of the island would be like a “centipede.” Originally, Wuzhizhou Island was called Guqizhou Island and Niuqizhou Island. Since it is an island, the only way to get to Wuzhizhou Island is by boat. The entrance fee to Wuzhizhou Island is only 50 yuan, but the boat ticket is 110 yuan. It seems that the managers here also know how pleasant it is to sail on the sea. If you don’t come to Wuzhizhou Island, it feels like you haven’t really been to Sanya. Wuzhizhou Island is a diving paradise. The visibility is high and the sea water is crystal clear blue. It is worth coming here even if you don’t dive. Wuzhizhou Island is the most shocking attraction in Sanya. It is like a place forgotten by God. Everything is so primitive, pure, and beautiful. Because Wuzhizhou Island was developed late, the attractions are well preserved, leaving no traces of human destruction. It is a mid-to-high-end consumption attraction. The cheapest hotel on the island costs more than 2,000 yuan per night, but it is definitely worth the money.

To get to Wuzhizhou Island, you need to take a 30-minute ferry. It is far from the hustle and bustle of the world. It is beautiful like a fairyland. As soon as you get off the boat, you step onto Lover’s Bridge. Look around and you will be speechless. The emerald green sea is blue-green near the shore, light blue further away, blue even further, and the furthest away is azure blue, like a gradient oil painting, but far more lively and dynamic than an oil painting. In the place where the sea and sky meet, there are verdant mountains encircling the island, fluffy white clouds floating in the azure sky. Such a dreamy world, I really can’t describe even one-ten-thousandth of its beauty.

The island is covered with fine, soft, white sand, which feels comfortable to step on. The vegetation on the island is particularly lush. There are towering ancient trees everywhere, as well as strange flowers and plants that you can’t see anywhere else. It is amazing how the vitality of nature is displayed here in full force. The tour guide said there are more than 2,000 kinds of plants on the island, with a wide variety. Because it is isolated from the mainland, it also preserves “Lu’an trees” from the dinosaur era, as well as “dragon blood trees” that are as rare as giant pandas.

Wuzhizhou Island

There are also rare plants here that exhibit the phenomenon of “symbiosis, parasitism, and strangulation.” The strangling fig is quite impressive. It is a cold-blooded killer in the plant world. The seemingly peaceful plant world actually has a fierce struggle for survival. The seeds of the strangling fig can germinate in the air and survive by attaching themselves to the host plant. At first, they are just soft and entangled around the host plant. Slowly, they grow bigger and bigger, until they are as dense as a net, depriving the host plant of nutrients and sunlight, eventually strangling the host plant tightly.

It is the most beautiful piece of pure land in my heart, and its unparalleled beauty deeply shocked me.

Sanya, Sanya, the most beautiful crystal ball left by God on earth. What I saw, what I felt, what I expressed, is far from being able to describe even one-ten-thousandth of its beauty.
